Star Wars Outlaws is a 2024 action-adventure game developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft. Set in the Star Wars universe between the events of The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983), the story follows Kay Vess, a young scoundrel who assembles a team for a massive heist in order to pay off a crime syndicate.

I started working Star Wars Outlaws as a Technical Level Designer from pre-production, through launch, and I'm currently working on post launch.

MY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Pre-Production Leadership
    • Led the technical design pre-production efforts.
    • Designed tech specifications for core systems: quest, living world, scripting, world-building, and road systems.
    • Worked on ways for scripts to remain optimized despite the switch to single player.
    • Estimated Tech LD scope and required headcount.
  • Content Development Standards
    • Set tech standards for Tech LD, level design, and quest design teams.
    • Wrote guides and onboarding materials.
  • Collaboration and Approval Processes
    • Represented Tech LD in quest and LD Ingredients approval processes.
    • Worked closely with Game Design and Quest Design to validate functionality requests.
  • Onboarding and Support
    • Onboarded codev studios and team members; collaborated throughout the project.
    • Served as a point of contact for level and quest design, supporting complex technical issues.
  • Implementation and Scripting
    • Implemented various LD Ingredients, with full responsibility for complex ingredients like elevators and doors.
    • Scripted living world events and created various gym levels for production needs.
    • Worked on seamless level transitions and owned NPC state management for trailblazer landing sites.
    • Had Technical ownership of the implementation of several hero moments.
    • Owned the usage of 'mutex' (supporting the world changing) in this project. 
  • Tool Development
    • Created a suite of tools in Python, enhancing production efficiency for hundreds of users.
    • Exposed functionality to the Python API and developed visual scripting nodes in C++.
    • Implemented Atlas support (Ubisoft’s internal mapping solution) and ensured automation and updates.
    • Setup and maintained various automations for extracting engine data used by some of my tools.
  • Technical Review and Engine Collaboration
    • Reviewed quest scripts for adherence to technical standards and logical integrity.
    • Collaborated with engine teams to develop new technologies for Snowdrop, streamlining pipelines and enhancing efficiency.
